The Well beneath the Chapel of the Innocents

The Bethlehem Chapel was consecrated in honour of the Holy Innocents murdered in the Saviour's birthplace, and for that reason it was also called the Chapel of the Innocents. There is said to have been a well here into which wicked mothers from the neighbourhood used to throw their children — and for that very reason, it is said, the chapel was raised above that well and dedicated to the Innocents of Bethlehem.
