Why the Street Is Called Red Street

Červená

The street was once called Butchers' Street after the Jewish meat stalls that used to stand here, together with the slaughterhouse, on the open ground east of the Old-New Synagogue, on the so-called Red Square. It received the name Red precisely because the Jewish meat stalls used by old custom to be painted red. Its older name, New Post Street, comes from the fact that in house number 167-3 there was once a post office; in that house there are long dark passages where the Jews are said to have hidden whenever they were persecuted, and through its little courtyard one could come almost as far as the Gypsy Synagogue.
