The First House in Prague

Cihelná

Historically
místa u královské cihelny pod Opyší
Period
podle Hájka rok 723
Told by
Václav Hájek z Libočan

According to a mistaken tradition, the first house in Prague stood on this spot. Hájek even knows the year — 723 — when the carpenters Klen and Sudiroh of Radlice hewed the threshold here. Afterwards there is said to have been the Libec court here, the seat of the earliest princes, where Saint Wenceslas too was brought up; the dwelling proper, however, is said to have stood opposite that court, where the later military supply store was. From 1546 there was a royal brickworks here, but as early as 1410 a house called Cihelnice is mentioned here, near the vineyard on the hill of Opyš.
