Where Saint John's Body Drifted

Dušní

Historically
Janské náměstí a kostel sv. Kříže v Dušní ulici
Period
1393

The origin of the name of Saint John's Square lies in the legend of Saint John of Nepomuk: the body of the drowned saint is said to have drifted as far as here in 1393, and fishermen took it out of the water. For a time it was laid in the church of the Holy Cross in Dušní Street, and a chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk was therefore established there; and in memory of this the provost of the Cyriac order set up his statue here in 1717.
