The Preacher for Whom the Church Was Too Small
Havelská
From 1358 Konrad Waldhauser preached in this church, a German Augustinian monk summoned to Prague by Charles IV. That eloquent man, the first of the so-called forerunners of Hus, inveighed against the luxury and debauchery of the time with such effect that he reformed many sinful persons. Often, it is said, the church could not hold the press of listeners and Konrad preached outside. Jews too came to his sermons, and when some would not suffer them among the rest, Konrad interceded for them, saying that perhaps one or another might be converted to Christianity. And because he also touched upon the unseemly greed of the clergy, he provoked against himself the mendicant friars, who accused him of heresy before the archbishop — but in vain.
