Ten Maidens and the Youngest, Euphrosyne

Karlova

Historically
dům u deseti panen, č. 454-56 v Karlově ulici

In the house there is said to have lived a poor joiner who had ten daughters, beautiful and good, and the fairest was — as in all fairy tales — the youngest, Euphrosyne. Their father saw to it strictly that his daughters worked hard and never let them go to any entertainment. The girls were nevertheless known of, and a certain count fell in love with the youngest. He disguised himself as an old man, came to the joiner and told him that he was childless and had heard of the goodness of his daughters; he wished therefore to adopt them all and to give each a dowry of twelve thousand gulden. In the end he took the whole family away to his castle near Benešov, where he asked for Euphrosyne's hand and married her. From this the house got its name.
