The Saint's Stone and the Passage to Faust's House

Karlovo náměstí

Historically
kámen svatého, asi 30 kroků od radnice novoměstské
Period
1627, 1743; kámen zmizel 1840

Some thirty paces from here towards the town hall Schaller still saw a marble stone bearing a cross, a skull and the year 1627. The people called it the saint's stone, and it vanished in 1840. Non-Catholic priests who meant to betray Prague are said to have been executed here. Others, however, tell that a passage ran from the town hall beneath that stone as far as Faust's house, and that persons of rank were secretly executed here by night, their bodies then thrown into the passage under the stone, which could be lifted. In 1743 too, when Maria Theresa regained the Kingdom of Bohemia that Charles Albert of Bavaria had seized, some of his adherents are said to have been secretly executed here.
