The Sword the Angels Brought to Charlemagne
Karlovo náměstí
Among them were a golden cross holding the lance with which the Saviour was pierced on the cross, one nail from the cross, a tooth of Saint John the Baptist, the sword of Charlemagne which angels are said to have brought him, his crown, his three tunics and his cloak, an imperial orb, a silver sceptre and others. Elizabeth of the Přemyslids had already collected holy relics diligently, and her son Charles IV continued very zealously. When he visited Trier in 1354 he asked for the hand of Saint Irmingard; but it had to be done in secret lest the people rise against it, and so Charles ordered the envoys he had sent from Prague for those relics to reveal nothing until they reached home. At Trier he also cut off a piece of what was said to be Saint Peter's crozier for himself, and part of the Virgin's veil came from there as well.
