The Treasure Under the Old Apple Tree
Karlův most
A poor man from the country near Prague used to beg Saint John to intercede for him in his need, and one night he dreamed that the saint bade him go to the bridge in Prague, where he would find a treasure. When the dream returned, the poor man went to Prague, but he walked the bridge all day in vain and found nothing. At last a soldier on guard noticed him, and on hearing of the dream told him that Saint John had appeared to him too and promised him a treasure — only that treasure lay in some village below a rock with three crosses, beside a cottage with an old apple tree standing by it. The countryman recognised his own home. When the soldier was relieved they went off together, found the treasure under the apple tree indeed, and shared it fairly.
