Charles IV Took the Original

Katedrála svatého Víta

Historically
obraz vera icon v kapli sv. Silvestra
Period
1368

Above the prie-dieu hangs, under glass, the well-known picture vera icon, that is, the true image of the Saviour, brought from Rome by Charles IV in 1368. The legend says that Charles IV obtained the pope's permission to have a copy made of that famous picture — and took the original and left the copy there. The head of Christ is painted on wood, and around it is a border with exquisite miniatures of the Bohemian patron saints at the sides; below and above, little angels hold scrolls with Latin inscriptions.
