The Door That Would Not Open
Katedrála svatého Víta
Of the tales about the chapel of Saint Wenceslas let this one stand here. In 1369 the young lord Petr of Michalovice committed some robbery on the estates of the cathedral of Saint Vitus. When he afterwards went to Italy with Charles IV, his wife made a pilgrimage to Prague to pray for her husband's safe return. But when she wished to enter the chapel of Saint Wenceslas, no one could open it, not even the locksmith who was fetched — and as soon as she had gone away, the door opened without the least difficulty. Evil was prophesied from this, and indeed the lord of Michalovice died in Italy at that very hour.
