The Jesuits' Walled-Up Treasure
Klementinum
On 5 October 1773 government commissioners came to the Clementinum and announced to the hundred and sixty-four members of the order present the papal bull dissolving the Jesuits. The tale relates that when the Jesuits were leaving their house, they were unwilling to hand over all their treasures. They therefore hired a mason, brought him down into the cellar blindfolded and had him wall up certain valuables there. The mason did his work so well that not even he himself could afterwards tell where that place was in the extensive cellars. And so the treasure lies there to this day.
