Saint Cunigunde on the Red-Hot Iron

Kostel svatého Jindřicha

Historically
hlavní oltář kostela sv. Jindřicha

On the high altar is a fine painting by Jan Jiří Heintsch; it shows Saint Henry interceding for Prague during the Swedish siege, and Saint Cunigunde walking barefoot over red-hot iron — for she did indeed submit to the ordeal by fire when she was accused of infidelity. The figures in that painting are said to be likenesses of eminent contemporaries of the painter. Formerly there was a splendid folding altarpiece here, and part of the painting on it is said to have been done by Charles IV himself.
