The Cobbler Who Dug Down to the Chest
Letenská
I found this legend about that garden. Monks fleeing Bohemia during the uprising of 1618 are said to have buried a great treasure here. Only three of them knew of it, and all three died abroad. Still the tale of the treasure passed from mouth to mouth, until one night a cobbler from the Lesser Town set about digging there — by night, of course. He had good instruction from the many little books on how treasures are sought, and he did find the spot and had already dug down to an iron chest when suddenly the alarm bells rang. There was a fire somewhere. The good cobbler looked round and thought it was burning in his own street. In his fright he left everything and ran home — but nothing was burning in their street. He hurried back, only to find neither the pit he had dug nor the mattock and spade he had left behind. And though he tried several times afterwards, he never got at that treasure.
