Julius the Barber and the Twelve-Year-Old Servant Girl

Content warning: violence, harm to a child
The newer house At the Red Boot, where a toll house is said to have stood, is conspicuous for its height. In 1604 it belonged to the court barber Julius, who with his wife beat a servant girl of twelve to death with a poker. They then shut themselves up in the house so that the magistrate got in only with a locksmith's help. In olden days a householder might beat his servants as he pleased, so long as he did not cripple them — even the renowned jurist Pavel Kristián of Koldín thrashed a maid in 1567 so that his ring knocked out her eye.
