That day the priest Jan preached in the church of Our Lady of the Snows more fierily than ever against the opponents of the chalice, and after the sermon the procession went to the church of Saint Stephen, which the crowd forced its way into. Then they marched past the town hall and halted; the priest Jan demanded that the councillors release the prisoners taken for religious disturbances. The councillors refused, shut the town hall and prepared to resist, even throwing stones down at the people and, it is said, striking the sacrament in the priest Jan's hands. The crowd flew into a rage and, led by Žižka, stormed the town hall. The burgomaster, two councillors, the deputy judge, his servant and five neighbours loyal to the councillors were swept out of the windows; as they fell they were caught on spears and pikes, and any who did not die at once were finished off on the ground. All that while the priest Jan stood there with the holy sacrament, inflaming the furious crowd still further. The old chroniclers add that the dead were stripped of what they wore, but that each was left his cap and his silver belt.
