The Virgin's Mantle, or the Dunghill
Pražský hrad
That no one was mortally hurt in the fall the Catholics proclaimed a miracle; and it was related that as Martinic and Slavata fell, the Virgin Mary appeared in a splendid mantle of heavenly blue and bore them down on that mantle unhurt. The non-Catholics held it a happy chance, and Pavel Skála of Zhoř says that they fell onto a rubbish heap: for many years, he says, the doorkeepers of the Bohemian chancery, whenever they swept out the chancery and the second room in which the sworn officials usually sit, threw all the sweepings down out of that very window, so that the place was not too hard and settled but rather like a loosened and softened dunghill. Hadovec afterwards, when showing the place to the Turkish envoy, declared the wondrous preservation of the governors to be the work of sorcery.
