The Mother and the Wicked Daughter
Resslova
Behind the railing in front of the church there once stood a sculptured group of two female figures, and a legend arose that these were a good mother and her godless daughter. The mother came here often to church, but her wicked daughter held it against her. And once, when the mother was at church and the daughter off at a dance, a thief robbed their poor dwelling. The daughter saw it first, ran after her mother to the church and met her at the door; she railed at her furiously for not having stayed to watch instead — and at that moment lightning struck them both dead and they turned to stone. The daughter in punishment for her wickedness, the mother so that she might be freed from the hardships of poverty. The petrified figures stood here a long time as a warning to bad children.
