Botocudos in Řetězová Street

Řetězová

Period
18. století

In the last century huge placards on the street corners announced an extraordinary event to the people of Prague one day. Three men of savage appearance were pictured on them, with tall feather caps on their heads, tattooed faces, a bone pierced through the nose, a round piece of wood in the lower lip and great rings in their ears. These, it was said, were Botocudos, cannibals from America, whom an Englishman had brought to Prague — and he showed them for a small coin in Řetězová Street itself.
