A Chapel Modelled on a Turkish Prison
Rotunda svatého Kříže
The people later made up a legend about that round building: that in the time of the crusades a Prague burgher set out from this street for the Holy Land, was taken captive there and, in slavery, was shut up in a round tower. He prayed fervently to be delivered, and when he came safely home he built this chapel here in the shape of his prison among the Turks. The Prager Wegweiser of 1817 still says that the little church is built in the form of a Turkish mosque. By another legend there was once a pond on this spot in which a girl drowned, hounded by her heathen parents for having accepted the Christian faith. And it is also said that beneath the chapel lies a cellar with an enormous treasure.
