Under the year 1235 the chronicles relate that some foreign Jew brought the Jews of Prague a certain document, and after a short time all the Jews of Prague went out beyond the gate with all their property and with banners and pitched camp by the church of Saint John on the Battlefield. And when the king sent to ask them what this meant, they declared that the Messiah had been born who would restore the kingdom of the Jews, and that they therefore wished to return to Palestine. But this, it is said, was a hoax contrived by one of their enemies — and before long they all returned to their homes, to no small mockery from the Christians.
