Told by
Kosmas

According to the legend Libuše prophesied, when she proclaimed the future greatness of Prague, that in the time of her grandson a foreign people would come — and if they were kindly received, they would bring the land good fortune. And a hundred years later she appeared to Hostivít and told him that the people of whom she had prophesied were now coming. For that reason, it is said, when the first Jews arrived among us in the year 860, Hostivít received them graciously and appointed them to live at Újezd. They began to build their town, that is, their Jewish street, there in 907, though only of wood, and their synagogue there was of wood as well. When they had increased, they lived on the right bank of the Vltava too, nearer to Vyšehrad — as Cosmas writes in his chronicle under the year 1091: 'Nowhere will you grow richer than in Prague itself; turn to the Prague suburb below Vyšehrad, there are the Jews and the wealthiest merchants of all nations.'
