The Lady Under the Black Veil
Spálená
There was once an inn here, they say. Some three hundred years ago a lady of beautiful figure lodged in it, always veiled, however, in a heavy black veil; wonders were told of her wealth. A count living in Celetná Street made her acquaintance, was charmed by her wit and offered her his hand. She made it a condition that he must not see her until after the wedding. To this too the count agreed, and after a short time he brought the unknown lady home as his wife. But in the morning the servants found him in a faint and the lady gone. She was the ghost of a girl the count had once loved and then treacherously abandoned.
