The King in the Mud
Staroměstské náměstí
On 24 February 1321 John of Luxembourg held a great tournament here. But the entertainment ended badly: the king took part in the jousting himself, in armour and theatrical dress, fell heavily from his horse, was thrown down in deep mud and badly trampled by the horses in the wild confusion, so that he was carried off half dead. Some lamented over it, others laughed — so far had royal dignity fallen already through his conduct.
