A Synagogue Built in a Single Night

Other legends grew up around a building so ancient and so sacred to the Jews. When the Jews were scattered over the whole world, some came here too and settled on the site of the present Jewish town, although there was as yet no Prague. And then angels came to them in human form and built them a synagogue in a single night. It is also said that children at play uncovered a synagogue in the ground and found a Torah there. And it is told elsewhere that when their houses were attacked and pulled down by Christians, the Jews were given their present place to live in; but they had lost all their property and had nothing to build a new temple with — whereupon an unknown old man is said to have appeared to them and told them: “Look at this mound in the midst of your town; dig, and you will find what you need.”
