Eighty Thousand for the Gravestones
Starý židovský hřbitov
The Jews guard this sacred dwelling of peace of theirs with anxious reverence and nowhere suffer the rest of the grave to be disturbed; hence there was a long dispute before some eighteen hundred metres by Sanytrová Street were expropriated from the cemetery in 1901, and the Jews then offered thirty thousand gulden that even that part might remain as it was. And once, it is said, a stonemason offered eighty thousand gulden for the gravestones here — which the Jewish community refused out of piety.
