The Organist and the Skeleton at the Ferry
Starý židovský hřbitov
Once a young Jew fell in love with a girl who, however, went over to Christianity. Thereupon he too had himself baptised, and when his beloved entered a convent he entered the priesthood as well and became organist in the cathedral of Saint Vitus. Neither the one nor the other, however, found contentment in the new faith; both later returned to the Jewish faith and are buried here. And that apostate priest comes out of his grave every night and goes to the Vltava, where a skeleton — the ghost of his beloved — is already waiting for him and ferries him to the other bank. Together they then go up to Hradčany, where the former priest plays the organ and the skeleton treads the bellows for him until the first cockcrow, when the two unhappy souls return to their grave.
