The Pebbles on the Gravestones
Starý židovský hřbitov
If you enter any Jewish cemetery you will see small pebbles laid on the gravestones; it is their general and ancient custom. Formerly, it is said, they used to lay money on the gravestones at every visit, and it was used to buy oil for the lamps in the synagogues and to support the poor — who were ashamed to beg, and so came here at dusk to gather the money.
