The Rabbi Who Wished to Die in Time

Starý židovský hřbitov

Historically
starý hřbitov židovský
Period
1787

Burials took place in this cemetery until 1787, and the last person buried here was Moses Beck, son of Lippmann. According to the legend, however, the last to be buried here was Rabbi Simche Porges. For when the Emperor Joseph II forbade burial within the city, that rabbi grieved greatly that his bones should lie elsewhere than where his forefathers rested — and he is said to have died, according to his wish, before the new law came into force.
