Where Troja Got Its Name
Trojský zámek
The name Troja belongs properly only to that remarkable château, built between 1683 and 1695. The origin of the classical name used to be explained by saying that the château took ten years to build — exactly as long as the city of Troy was besieged. A description of 1780 states instead that an old ruin stood here which someone compared to fallen Troy. In fact the name came from the magnificent garden staircase, adorned with a beautiful sculptural work from Greek mythology, the battle of the Giants with Olympus.
