The Black Dog with Fiery Eyes
Vyšehrad
Coming from the last building up to the towering ramparts, you have before you a level place where a gate and a steep road once were; now the road turns through a former wicket along a ledge of the wall to a massive dark gateway, still guarded by soldiers, which they call the Brick Gate or the Military Gate. That standing sentry in those deserted places is no pleasant duty we may readily believe — the more timid soldiers used to see white figures of spirits wandering about here, or a black dog with fiery eyes said to guard buried treasure, or the ghost of a Frenchman who was shot here. He is said to frighten the sentries most of all, and more than once someone has fired at him — but the fight against ghosts is vain.
