The Gold Guarded by a Two-Tailed Lion
Vyšehrad
Below Vyšehrad lies a bottomless deep, and there Libuše rests on a golden bed. But whoever looks down there will drown on that spot within a year and a day. And in the rock is hidden a great treasure of gold, guarded by a mighty two-tailed lion with fiery tongues lolling out. Only once a year, on Good Friday, is the rock open — and only for as long as the Passion is read in church. A man once ventured in to take some gold; and there was so much of it there that two wagons could not have carried it. He was already reaching for the gold when he thought he heard his child calling him. He looked round — and at that the treasure vanished from his sight, the earth shook under him, and before he could think he was up on the Vyšehrad rock.
