The Golden Frog
Vyšehrad
Libuše is said to have had a golden frog, and it was enchanted. Once, as the princess sat talking at table with her maidens, she took out the golden frog and set it on the table. And the good frog hopped this way and that until it turned to the east and so remained. From this Libuše prophesied that much precious metal would be found in that quarter, that is at Kutná Hora. Whole lumps of pure silver and gold are said to have been found in the mines, and Libuše stored them at Vyšehrad in deep cellars; the idol Zelu is said to have been made of that gold, and a whole silver horse found in the mines was brought here. That treasure, they say, still lies somewhere in the rock and will be found only when things go worse in Bohemia than they ever have before. Under Boleslav the Cruel too, hoards of silver are said to have been stored here in deep cellars, until on the advice of his elders the duke had the first Prague groschen struck from them.
