The Light Above the Water
Vyšehrad
The body of Saint Longinus was brought from Rome to Prague in 1409 and laid with honour in a stone coffin in the Vyšehrad church. When the Czech heretics took Vyšehrad in 1420 they rolled it with its stone tomb into the river. And when that stone coffin with the holy body had sunk in the river, a bright light showed above the spot, giving a sign and admonishing people to raise the body from that place and carry it somewhere more worthy; many people drowned crossing there. Because of the brightness of that light the heretics would not suffer the holy body to remain in the water any longer, drew it out with its stone tomb, carried it to the town hall of the New Town and set it down there.
