The Soldier They Shut in the Madhouse
Vyšehrad
From 1749 to 1760 the dean here was Jan Tomáš Berghauer. When he had digging done in the graveyard in search of the tomb of King Vratislav, word went round that he was looking for treasure. And in 1762 a soldier named Jan Reininger claimed that a spirit had appeared to him on guard duty and promised to tell him of a treasure. His claim to know of a treasure was believed even in Vienna, and troops dug here by the church — until the soldier was shut up in the madhouse.
