The Mother Who Came Back to the Cradle
Staroměstské náměstí
Karel Chalupa tells this legend of the house, following Weyhrother. In 1618 the wife of the chief magistrate Otomar Podivín, Anežka, suddenly disappeared from here. As the maid who slept in the same room with her and her little son related, a tall lady in black appeared to them at night and spoke thus to Anežka: “If you would save your child from death, come with me, your mother; a great guilt weighs on me and only you can help me.” More the maid did not know, except that her mistress vanished suddenly with that spirit. But Podivín's wife appeared in the house every day afterwards, always at her child's cradle; she looked at him, kissed him and vanished again, and could not be held back by the pleas of her unhappy husband. She ceased to appear only when her son had grown up.
