Two White Doves on the Roof Ridge

So it was in 1559 too, when the Jewish town — the Jewish street, as it was also called — burned almost entirely, together with the Jewish town hall, in a fire set on the Thursday before Saint John the Baptist's day. The terrified inhabitants barely saved their lives; some fled to safer places, others crowded lamenting about their sacred school and prayed fervently that at least it might be spared. And at the moment of greatest danger two white doves appeared unlooked-for on the ridge of the roof — and at once the fire drew back and died down in the neighbouring houses as well. When it was quite over, the doves fluttered their wings merrily and rose into the air. And those, it is said, were the two angels who had carried the building here.
