A Devil Named Zardan
Vyšehrad
This legend is read in Beckovský too, and that chronicler asserts that no such stone is to be found anywhere in the Kingdom of Bohemia and that it was truly brought from the church of Our Lady beyond the Tiber in Rome. He cites in support a Latin letter from a priest who was driving a devil out of a man named Jakub Zimmermann in Rome — and that devil, by name Zardan, is said to have confessed that it was he who had carried the column to Vyšehrad. Another legend says that the church of Saints Peter and Paul is built of stone brought from various parts of Bohemia: the devil carried it at Saint Peter's command. But the devil grew weary on the way and scattered stones everywhere — and that is why some places in Bohemia are stony.
