The Bath with the Moving Floor
Vyšehrad
Content warning: violence
Where the rock stands sheer above the Vltava, a piece of old wall juts from a ledge; this, they say, is Libuše's bath. And since the people themselves saw the emptiness of that notion, they invented the story that the bathing chamber had a moving floor: whomever Libuše wished to put out of the way without an outcry, she invited to her and offered a bath — but no sooner had he stepped in than the floor opened and the poor wretch bathed for ever in the depths of the Vltava. The same, incidentally, is told of Wenceslas IV. And up above, the patch of grass in the armoury yard between the walls is Libuše's garden; there, it is said, white maidens still appear on summer nights and sing sweetly.
