Mortar of Egg Whites and the Cheeses of Unhošť

Karlův most

Historically
kamenný most a kaple sv. Václava
Period
za Karla IV.

The legend of the unbreakable mortar is said to have arisen because the whites of several thousand eggs were used as a cement when the precious stones were set in the chapel of Saint Wenceslas. Others tell that the mortar was also mixed with milk — and that the men of Unhošť then sent curd and small cheeses instead of milk. The historical kernel of these tales is probably that collections for the building of Saint Vitus's cathedral and the stone bridge were made throughout the archdiocese, as the charters of Arnošt of Pardubice kept in the university library attest.
